Today, I will be giving a toast, a memorial and a eulogy to my brother Douglas. January 28, 1996, Douglas Patrick was born. Premature and underweight, you didn’t live long. Mom and dad don’t talk about you a lot but they’ve never forgotten you. There’s a box with your name on it in the basement and dad planted a maple tree in front of my window. We avoid mom on your birthday and we’ve visited your grave. Mom and dad wanted three children, so on February 13th, 1997, you became a big brother. I was born, daddy’s little girl, even though I’ve never meet you I still feel you near. And to be honest, I cry when I hear the song “ teach me how to Dougie” because it reminds me of you. Next, on October 7, 1999, I became a big sister. Our brother Kevin Ryan was born. Can you believe it? He turned 12 this year. But this joy came with a pain. Kevin had a twin who was never born, I’m sure that both of you are watching over me right now. And don’t worry, Kevin is annoying enough for the two of them. To think, if you had survived , in a few months you’d be graduating high school, teaching me how to drive, giving Kevin girlfriend advice and going off to college. Well since we can’t rewrite the past, I have to say goodbye and I’ll see you in heaven. With love, your baby sister.
